values & approach

I believe art has deep value and meaning … for artists, audiences, communities … for every human being. Art feeds our hearts, our health and our history. Through the communication of intangibilities and ideas, art nourishes our ever-evolving understandings … of our world and our selves … of finite existence … and the expansive infinite(?) universe in which we spin.

values

  • clear .. and abstract .. communication
  • honesty, experimentation & play
  • the communal & the individual
  • wonder .. humour .. whimsy
  • best practice & sustainability
  • kindness, professionalism & reciprocity

I support and advocate for artist rights and fair conditions.
I believe artists deserve the right to safe and sustainable practices, and to exist in a supportive and supported industry.

approach

  • playful: open curiosity, wide-eyed wonder and well-meaning mischief
  • professional: clear and kind conduct and communication. honesty (and humour, it keeps us human) through the hard ships and hard bits
  • considered and considerate: I stop to think, and genuinely give a sheet!*

copyright, brand … & permissions

Copyright is the legal substance of the artist’s matter; it matters and it matters good. Use of my work or words is not permitted without my express permission. Why? Because I value and respect my work, my worth, what I have put in to make those things what they are … and I value the bravery needed to share them with you. And simply because of the law. Thanks law!

If you would like to use or license any of my work, we need to have a chat. We can start that lovely conversation here. Quotes are to be attributed, and ideally asked for.

‘be yourself. everyone else is already taken.’ *

*Oscar Wilde?

I value the ability to share my work and words … and without the need to censor myself for fear of finding my phraseology, brand or IP in places I didn’t put it. Inspiration has its place, in life and in art … but I posit, and I feel, that imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. I agree far more with Wilde, *or whomever this quote should really be attributed to. Be yourself. That’s far more interesting.

acknowledgments & recognition

I acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians and storytellers of the lands on which I live, learn and create. I acknowledge that Aboriginal people have suffered injustice, including the oppression of language and culture. I recognise their ongoing connection to country, culture and community, and the importance of Indigenous cultural practices and knowledge. I pay my respect to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living today. Sovereignty was never ceded.

I value and appreciate the Deaf community and the opportunity to learn about the community’s rich languages, history and culture. It is a privilege, an honour and a trust to learn and use Auslan, an officially recognised language of the Australian Deaf community. With knowledge and awareness of the impact of sign language oppression on d/Deaf people around the world, and that language and culture are interlinked, I respect and support the need for agency, self expression, cultural awareness and Deaf-led approaches.

Some clarity on my place and position: I am hearing. I don’t represent d/Deaf or hard of hearing people. I love sign language, sign poetry (omg!) … and most importantly, deeply value my connection with the community. I am guided by Deaf people and perspectives on inclusivity and cultural appropriateness. I work with, consult with and commission Deaf artists, Auslan interpreters, community members & leaders.

Open to feedback on my approaches and artwork accessibility*.
