curiously omitting

Performed at the 2011 Australian Poetry Slam National Final in the Sydney Theatre

transcript

voiceover: The Australian Poetry Slam is a national competition for writers who perform their work.

poet:

I’m curious at something he didn’t say.
But he did say … love
at least three times
and I swapped places
rode ruby waves inside my skull
to find out that it was me who was curiously … omitting

Who says love anymore?
Who says love?

I love . truth and theatre
bold moves and unsaid statements
crisp . clean . white. cotton.

I love depth,
old treasures from markets that sell the scurf of yesterday’s deceased estates.

I love something … indefinable,
days too potent to speak.

I love the word ‘sandwich’.

I love phrases that haunt you for weeks,
sparrows playing the gutters like drum skins.
I love the horrific beauty of taxidermy in all its horrific beauty
and I really fucken love the word ‘sandwich’,
and I love when people get insanely passionate in their speech and forget about the way they look, sound and spit.

I love that poetry never truly meets your original intent
but touches upon another deeply
and with no remorse.

I love.
I love in the kind of way that makes me want to
leave this stage blank
so as to contain
the very wordlessness of that feeling …
